During today’s comps prep, I was deeply saddened to learn that members of the Governing Board of Mesa, Arizona Public Schools are voting tomorrow on a proposal to “eliminate every teacher-librarian over a three-year period.” (I do hope this means The Board is debating whether or not to eliminate the position rather than the person).
Espoused reasons for this short-sighted solution:
- declining enrollment (though many of those who remain require an English Language Learner immersion program – which, no doubt, would be more successful had it skilled information professionals to assist)
- a $15 million budget deficit (causes: tax cuts? foreclosures? poor planning?)
